New Phone

I need a new phone in the worst way. My current HTC Pure is HORRIBLE -- it locked up every time I get a text, and I use it for texting 99% of the time. These are the phones that have been recommended to me -- I'd really prefer a smartphone with a touch screen and a physical keyboard, although right now I'm desperate enough I'd even try an iPhone. Any recommendations?

  • Apple iPhone 4 (16 GB)
  • LG Ally
  • Samsung Captivate
  • Apple iPhone 3G S (8 GB)
  • HTC Aria
  • BlackBerry Torch 9800 (StephanieBCl is offering bribes if I get a BlackBerry! LOL)
  • HTC Evo Shift
  • HTC Evo Tilt

I've had the iPhone 3 and 4. I honestly am thrilled with the four, it's fairly easy to use, and there are some good books to be found to help you get the most of it. Also, lots of free or cheap (less than a couple dollars) applications.

iPhone
Two of my girlfriends are real iPhone junkies. I don't like the idea of paying the iPhone surcharge, but if lildomino can find me a cheap one somewhere, I'll take it. B)

I don't even download apps on my phone anymore, since I have to hard-reset it so often. At first they blamed the phone problems on the app, but it stops working even when I leave it completely as-is.

I'd aim a bit higher than most of those. The two phones with physical keyboards I've looked at (we're about to buy) are the Motorola Droid 2 Global (the Droid 2 also has one, but the Global's the better phone) and the Sprint Evo Shift 4G (not the plain Evo, which lacks a physical keyboard). The Droid is noticeably less expensive (especially if you buy through Wirefly or even Dell), but the Evo is a very nice phone indeed.

(We're likely to buy the Droid X unless the HTC Droid Thunderbolt is released soon. Physical keyboard isn't a dealbreaker for us; both M and I like to read ebooks on the phone, and the big screen is a selling point for the X. Plus, Verizon has the unlimited data plan still in place, which we'd have to stay with AT&T and be grandfathered to keep, otherwise. Either way, it's a big upgrade from the Q9H, which is in the usericon, that we now have.)

Good luck!

Thanks. I was looking at the Evo Shift... elbanditorojo has an Evo he really likes, but I hate virtual keyboards, so I thought that might make a good compromise. If lildomino is willing to let me use her re-up to get a discount I can get a better phone... if I have to pay full price I might have to settle for something less.

I don't really want a BlackBerry... the bribery offer is keeping it in the running more than anything else. On the other hand, as smartphones keep seeming to move away from nice physical keyboards, I might have to get a BlackBerry just so I can go back to the super-fast typing I enjoyed when I had a Blackjack.

I have a Fascinate, which is a sibling to the Captivate (they're both Galaxy S model phones), and I like it a great deal. The Sprint version, the Epic, is like the Fascinate/Captivate on steroids. It'd got the slide out physical keyboard that you want, as well.

As a reference point, I like my Fascinate enough that I don't for a second regret paying full price for it (since I upgraded and didn't want to extend my Verizon contract) and when my contract is up in a few months, I'm thinking about paying full price again for one of the Galaxy S phones on a different provider. They're really nice. The screens are beautiful. One of the few that I've been able to easily use in direct sunlight, though I've heard the new iPhones do will in that regard as well.

Cool. Thanks. I might be willing to pay full price for something I know I'd love... I've been been burned so many times it's harder to commit to something half the price of my laptop. LOL
